background .

Pre-Yakuza 0

At a young age, both him and his sister Yuko were orphaned. Their parents were never that great though, always away on business and other things that never kept them in the house that long. When they were around, it was worse. This of course meant Nishiki took up the parental role for Yuko, and did whatever he could to provide for her. Upon being orphaned, Nishiki and Yuko were brought to Sunflower orphanage, run by a man named Kazama. He was a yakuza, but you'd never know. He'd always been kinder than what you'd expect. He'd met Kiryu and Yumi there, and they'd all became good friends. Not long after, Yuko had developed a serious heart condition. She'd been placed in the hospital from a young age and underwent surgery every few months. It was clear she would have to be in permanent medical care, but Nishiki always visited her with Kiryu and Yumi when they could. As soon as he was able to, he tried to make money to help with her surgeries. Though, what she really needed was a heart transplant. Even if he had the money, it'd be quite some time before she'd get one.At the time, albeit maybe a little irrational, Nishiki blamed himself for it. He'd rather be in Yuko's shoes if it meant she'd be able to live her life outside of the hospital. Some years later, at around 17, Kiryu and Nishiki went to Kazama to ask to join into the yakuza. Of course, Kazama tried very hard to convince them otherwise. To no avail, he'd allowed the two of them to join the family.

Yakuza 0

A few years into joining the Dojima family, both Nishiki and Kiryu had been around 20 years old. They did everything they could together, and had become sworn brothers. A pact they could never go back on, and something that had been even more important to the two of them than the yakuza it was founded upon. Their relationship was that of two brothers, they'd never leave each other behind.Following the normal events of 0, everything present in canon stays the same. After Kiryu had reclaimed his good name and joined back into the Dojima family, Nishiki spent more time with him. They'd go around to bars just like they normally would. In most cases, you could find Nishiki at cabarets or travelling to nearby cities. He'd try dragging Kiryu along, but Kiryu wasn't as social as he was. Still, they did spend a lot of time together.

Yakuza Kiwami

Upon Patriarch Dojima's death at Nishiki's hand, as well as Kiryu's arrest, things had quickly gotten out of control for him. The night Yumi had been harassed, Nishiki had agreed to take her home and watch after her. However, Yumi couldn't remember anything. She'd been afraid of Nishiki, not even knowing who he was and she ran off. Nishiki had of course tried following her, but to no avail. He'd gone back to Serena, telling Reina the news. He was worried about Yumi, and worried about breaking his promise to Kiryu. As well as feeling guilty for all of it. While he didn't regret Dojima's murder, he regret Yumi having to witness it.Still, he pressed on with looking for Yumi, he told himself he would find her and bring her back. He promised Reina he'd bring her back to them and help her. However... he couldn't find her no matter how hard he looked. Nishiki brought it up to Reina, explaining that he hadn't found her and doubted he ever would find her. They argued, and he yelled at Reina. Feeling immediately guilty for yelling at her, he apologized. Though, he never forgot what she said. Or, more so what he interpretted it as. Without Kiryu to rationalise with him, he was starting to become unsure of both himself and those around him. Holding most people are arms length.A couple months later, Kashiwagi had called Nishiki into the Kazama family office. He'd explained to Nishiki that Kazama decided to give him his own family. Of course he was thrilled, but he knew his reputation with the others in the Tojo clan was... hardly any good. He'd gone through a lot of berating from them, many believing that Kiryu was Kazama's favorite; that it'd be easier if he'd been the one in jail as opposed to Kiryu. He didn't let this deter him however, he told Kashiwagi that he'd make the Nishikiyama family strong so that Kiryu would have a place to go when he finally got out.By this time, Yuko had been due for her final surgery. Nishiki couldn't accept this fact and confronted her doctor. He explained that he'd do anything to help her if he could. The doctor proposed he could get ahold of a heart for Yuko, had Nishiki been able to come up with 30 million yen. Nishiki had agreed to the terms, and gathered up Matsuhige to attempt to garner the money. Though, Matsuhige had less than respectable methods of obtaining it. Kashiwagi had informed Nishiki that he can't let his men mooch off other families areas, and scolded him for it. Nishiki tried asserting to Matsuhige that he can't do that, but Matsuhige wouldn't listen. Sighing, he'd given up on it.Until he'd been approached by Shimano. He was a well known yakuza patriarch, and offered some bits of information to Nishiki. He told him that Kazama planned all of what he's going through, and that he'd been given men Kazama knew he couldn't handle. As well as telling him that Kazama only cares about Kiryu, and Nishiki was an after thought. Having nobody else to counter the opinion, all Nishiki could do was accept it. Besides, it did make a lot of sense. At that point, he'd began to resent Kazama. After all, what did Kazama really do for him? He gave him yakuza men who refused to listen to him, and let the other Tojo clan members talk down to him constantly. Being the captain, he'd be able to tell others to stand down. However, that didn't happen. Still, he had the problem with his sister now. He had no time to think about that.Only a few days later, Matsuhige strolled into the Nishikiyama family office. He told Nishiki that someone just paid their entire debt to them, 30 million exactly. Nishiki had already seen the red flags with what he said, and asked about who owed them. Matsuhige shrugged and said it was some doctor. Without any second question, he got up and left the office to the hospital. Surely enough, the doctor asigned to Yuko packed up and left. In the same breath, he was informed that Yuko had passed away.TW: suicide ment. That night, still shaken up from the events that transpired, he'd headed back to the family office. Nobody was there at this time, and he'd sat on one of the couches. Staring off into the distance, it was clear he wasn't in a good mental space. He'd nearly attempted to take his own life until Matsuhige walked in. Placing down his knife, he'd completely ignored Matsuhige. Of course, the man spewed insults at him, until Nishiki had had enough. Standing up, knife in hand, he stared directly at him before stabbing him. He'd confessed to him about Dojima, before pulling out the knife ensuring he'd bleed out. Satisfied with himself, it took a few moments for him to even realise what he'd done. Though... it didn't bother him. He didn't care anymore. From this point on, he'd became much more violent with his family members and gained more popularity. Though not within the ranks of the Tojo itself. The members of his family were to listen to him or they'd die by his hand, simply put. He'd appointed Shinji as his Lieutenant Advisor, making him relatively safe from Nishiki's darker personality. Everyone else would have to listen to his every word, and stay in line. Question his choices, talk back, walk into his office on a bad day? You'll be shot or stabbed on the spot. After this moment in his life, he'd decided to get revenge on that doctor who left his sister to die. He sold him off to hitmen looking for him, and is presumed to be dead now. It won't bring Yuko back, but it at least makes up for what he did.

interpersonal relationships.
As far as social relations go, they're vaguely non existent for him. Nishiki hardly keeps in contact with friends he's had for ages and if not contacted he may never speak to them. Only Reina had kept up with him over the past few years, thus Reina being the only friend he feels he has. She always kept up with him regardless of everything. As for everyone else? He feels he's separated himself from everyone. He doesn't believe he really needs anyone else.
On the other hand, while he's at work it's a completely different story. His work relations are toxic at best, on both sides of the relationship. Most of his men have a less than professional obsession with him. Though, they weren't always like this. Previously they hardly listened to him which as a yakuza that wouldn't work. Being as unruly as they were, the only thing Nishiki believe he could do was use threats as a way to get them to listen. It had started with Matsuhige, after that he saw the only way people listened was if he threatened their life.
familial relations.
The only ones he's ever seen as family are Kazama, Kiryu and Yuko. Though, as a perfect example of how betrayal plays a huge role in his daily life, he deeply hates Kazama. In his eyes, Kazama betrayed any trust he had for him and may be the sole cause for his issues. His broken trust with someone he'd recognized as a father figure. He never lifted a finger to help him, and when he was struggling the most he only made it worse. Continuously antagonizing him.
In Kiryu's case, he has a hatred based solely around jealousy towards him. Being Kazama's favourite, at first it hadn't bugged him. Though when Kiryu went to jail, he gained an intense amount of jealousy. Between Kazama showing obvious favouritism for Kiryu, and the other yakuza members around wishing Kiryu hadn't gotten arrested, he sees now that Kiryu was always better than him to everyone else.
self destructive behavior.
On top of the list, he has a complete disregard for his own life. Threats to his life don't phase him, nor do any situations where he may be in some form of danger. After losing his sister this became very evident in his behavior, almost definitely tied to survivor's guilt. He hates being alive, but sticks around strictly to achieve his own goals. He's decided that he will stay alive until Kazama is dead, and Nishiki is at the top of the Tojo clan.
In addition, he is a huge workaholic. 90% of the time he's in his office doing work. He hardly sleeps, and when he does he typically ends up just passing out at his desk while working. Truthfully, finding him at his house is a rare occurrence. You'd be better off heading to the family office to get a hold of him. He doesn't see any problem with the amount of time he pours into his work.
sociopathy.
One of his more serious issues is sociopathy, something he's never been diagnosed with but evidently has. He can be erratic and aggressive quite often, and hardly cares about how people feel. As well as resorts to manipulation to get what he wants, even going as far as threatening and injuring others. Part of him recognizes he has a problem, though maybe only by befriending Akiyama. However, usually he chalks up his issues as 'just normal for a yakuza'. Though this isn't the case at all. As much as he doesn't feel much remorse, this only applies to certain people he associates with. As much as he tries to deny it, he fears he'd hurt those he actually cares about. On the other hand, had they ever betrayed him he wouldn't care anymore. He holds loyalty very close and it plays a huge part in how he acts towards others.
